Weber 1520 Propane Gas Go-Anywhere Grill Review
June 29, 2010 by admin
Whether camping or tailgating, the Go-Anywhere propane grill by Weber makes it easy to bring grilling on the road. This compact grill measures 29 x 12.5 x 9 inches when folded (width x height x depth) but provides an unexpectedly ample cooking surface amounting to 160 square inches. This means a cook can pack four medium steaks onto the easy to clean, triple nickel-plated cooking grate.
Lighting up the Weber Go-Anywhere is easy thanks to the simple push-button ignition system. Like its larger stable mates, this portable propane-fueled grill has a Flavorizer bar that distributes heat and promises tasty cookouts every time.
Moving the grill is never a problem, as its pivoting legs lock the lid securely in place for safe transportation. The lid performs double duty as a wind-barrier as well when hung on the side of the grill from the built-in lid hangers. The porcelain-enameled steel lid and cook box promise a sturdy product that is built to last for a long time.
Lighting Is a Breeze, Even With a Breeze
More than one review found one of the best things about the grill is how the electronic ignition makes it easy to light. Not only is the grill easy to start, the construction is such that lighting the grill is a breeze even on windy days, and the wind barrier presented by the lid plays a significant role in ensuring the fire stays lit.
The fire produced by the Weber Go-Anywhere achieves high temperatures of up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit within 10 minutes and stays consistent according to the temperature settings the cook desires. Cooks consistently produced good sear marks by grilling on high heat and with the lid closed. The cooking area, which is generous in relation to the overall size of the grill, can cook six burgers or two large steaks within a matter of minutes.
Improvised Warming and Grilling Areas
Although the grill does not have a warming rack, cooks have found that the cooking surface nearer to the propane tank is cooler than the end further away from the tank. The difference in the temperatures across the grill allow for improvised grilling and warming areas, albeit small ones. Weber's characteristic Flavorizer bar vaporizes any fallen meat juices; ensuring food on the grill above is fully permeated with smoky, barbecue flavor.
A review or two from ardent campers and fans of impulsive road trips attest to the portability of the grill as well. Its size makes it easy to carry, transport and store, while the porcelain-enameled steel means it can withstand its share of knocks and bumps.
Can Be Too Hot To Handle
One review suggested that the grill should be used on a non-flammable surface when grilling at high temperatures. This is because the steel frame of the grill conducts heats extremely well, and heats the surface beneath extensively. The heat can also be a problem when cooking with the lid closed, as the handle can get very hot, so use of a mitt when removing the lid is advisable to avoid injury. The grill also does not come with a grease catcher, which can make cleanup a nuisance. Some people also found the gas starter button not as sturdy as they would have liked.
